Some homes do not need to be completely reinvented — they simply need to be brought back to life.

That was exactly the case with this beautiful five-bedroom residence in Runda, Nairobi. Built in the early 1990s, the house carried the kind of timeless architectural character that is becoming increasingly rare in Nairobi’s newer developments: rich hardwood floors, exposed brick detailing, generous room sizes, imported antique light fixtures, and a warm old-world luxury feel.

But after close to nine years of continuous occupancy by a commercial tenant, the house had inevitably suffered the kind of wear that slowly dulls even the most beautiful property.

The owners knew the home still had tremendous value.

What it needed was not a complete redesign.

It needed a thoughtful refresh — one that would preserve its original soul while making it feel clean, polished, modern enough for today’s premium rental market, and ready to command stronger rental income.

That is where Its Magic Creative came in.

Runda house renovation

A Strategic Renovation, Not a Character Erase

One of the most important decisions on this project was understanding what not to change.

Many renovation projects make the mistake of stripping older homes of everything that makes them memorable. This Runda home already had excellent bones. The exposed brickwork, the warm timber finishes, the stately fireplace area and even some of the imported antique lighting fixtures were features worth preserving.

Our role was to renew rather than replace wherever possible.

That meant approaching the house with a careful eye: restoring aged finishes, repairing damaged areas, brightening dark surfaces, modernizing the utility fixtures, and giving the entire home the feeling of newness without turning it into a generic modern shell.

Restoring the Hardwood Floors That Defined the House

One of the standout features of this Nairobi renovation project was the full restoration of the home’s hardwood flooring — a premium combination of mahogany and mvule timber that runs throughout the house.

Years of office traffic, heavy furniture movement and exposure near large sliding doors had left sections of the floor scratched, worn and weather-affected.

Instead of replacing this valuable material, we carried out a complete restoration process that included:

  • sanding down the existing timber,
  • replacing only the few irreparably damaged sections,
  • deep repolishing,
  • and full revarnishing.

The result was dramatic.

The floors immediately brought back the warmth, richness and quiet luxury that had always been one of the strongest identities of the home.

Brightening the Interiors Without Losing the Warmth

Like many Nairobi homes built in the 90s, the house had older paint tones and dated ceiling finishes that made some rooms feel visually heavy.

Sections with popcorn-textured ceilings were removed and replaced with smoother, cleaner ceiling finishes, while the entire house was repainted in a warmer modern white — bright enough to feel fresh, but soft enough to complement the existing brick and wood tones.

This one design decision completely changed how light moved through the house.

The interiors instantly felt:

  • larger,
  • cleaner,
  • newer,
  • and more welcoming.

Technical Repairs That Protected Long-Term Value

A successful home renovation is never just about aesthetics.

Behind the scenes, this project involved substantial repair and renewal work to ensure the property was truly market-ready for the next tenant.

Our team handled:

  • mold remediation in affected rooms,
  • roof leak repairs,
  • selective ceiling repairs,
  • terrazzo floor reconstruction on the exterior after root damage,
  • replacement of shower fittings,
  • selected toilet upgrades,
  • modern curtain rod installation,
  • lock replacements across the property,
  • light wardrobe and door hardware repairs,
  • and a full bathroom refresh in one of the most worn spaces.

Because the home had been built well structurally, these interventions were focused and efficient — allowing us to solve practical issues without compromising the elegance of the original construction.

Lighting Upgrades That Respected the Home’s Original Personality

Not every old fixture should be thrown away.

Some of the decorative lights in this home were imported antique pieces with a distinctive character that would be difficult to replicate today. Instead of replacing everything blindly, we selectively restored some fixtures and introduced modern LED upgrades where functionality mattered most.

Warm ambient lighting was introduced in bedrooms and living areas, while bathrooms and utility spaces received durable high-quality LED flush fittings. Exterior security lighting was also upgraded to solar-powered automatic systems for better efficiency.

This blend of restoration and modernization helped the house feel current while still retaining the quiet sophistication the owners loved.

Completed in Just 6 Weeks — Ready for the Rental Market Again

Because every extra month of vacancy means lost income for a property owner, speed and planning were critical.

With a carefully scheduled large team on site, the full Runda house renovation was completed in just one and a half months.

The property returned to market quickly.

And just as importantly — it was occupied again soon after.

For the owners, that was a clear confirmation that the investment had worked.

The house no longer felt like a tired former rental.

It felt desirable again.

More Than a Renovation — A Return to What the Home Meant

Perhaps the most rewarding part of this project was not the polished floors or the brighter walls.

It was watching the owners walk through the finished house and feel something familiar again.

This was the home they had built decades ago.

The home their children had grown up in.

The home that once represented a major life milestone for them.

And after the refresh, it finally felt like that home again.

Fresh. Proud. Valuable. Alive.

For us, that emotional restoration was just as meaningful as the physical one.

Because great interior renovation is never only about changing spaces.

It is also about helping people reconnect with what those spaces once meant.
